Roomies is a great romance. It has a marriage of convenience to a man with a sexy Irish accent, and a Broadway show thrown in for fun. What sets it apart from most of my favorite stories are the characters. Holland, a recent graduate working with her uncle on Broadway, is someone I want to hang out with and have coffee. She’s believable as a recent graduate trying to find her way while attempting to help everyone else but herself.
When Holland meets Calvin, a hot, talented musician she discovered in a subway station, the reader understands why she becomes obsessed with him. What Christina Lauren manages to do is create a character in a clearly fabricated situation and make her actions reasonable and believable. When Holland decides that a marriage of convenience is the only way for her to help Calvin and her uncle, she acknowledges that it’s kinda crazy. Her self awareness keeps her from becoming just another romance trope.
