A Rocky Start
Christina Lauren is one of my go-to authors, and books like "Love and Other Words" and "My Favorite Half-Night Stand" rank among my more favored books I've read this year. However, "Roomies" did not start off strong. I felt like the character introduction was rushed, and the main character, Holland, is not given a solid foundation before we are introduced to the love interest, Calvin. I'm also super weary of the fact that not only was this plot beginning with stalker-like behaviors on Holland's part, but then we are facing the "use me to get married to stay in the country" storyline.
Do I think this story could have potential if approached a different way? Yes. However I do not feel a pull to continue reading Holland's story, as she seems a little reliant on others (apartment mostly paid by uncle... job secured by uncle... gets Calvin an audition from connections with uncle...). I find it ironic that nepotism was brought up in the book at all, given that Holland has access to most of her day-to-day life because of her uncle.
I'm always here for a good romance, but the connection to this female lead was not there for me.
