More to It
This book was far more than a murder-mystery thriller. It was a statement on systemic inequality, biases, and the justice system in general.
The way Brooks wove these important topics and reflections on change into the plot of a YA murder mystery was seamless. Yes, I enjoyed a fast-paced story about the murder of these boys' teacher and the horrible school they attended, but there was so much more to it. The new perspectives I gained on the treatment of boys of color in this fictional school (based on our world) was unreal. I've learned so much about systemic racism and the legal/justice system over the years, but this book truly wrapped up each topic nicely for the taking. I was eager to understand more of what these boys were going through while also following along with the engaging plot in discovering who killed the teacher.
I absolutely recommend this book to young adults and adults alike!
