This is a young adult crime story that deals with themes of racial disparity, prejudice and injustice. The book occurs in the aftermath of the murder of a high school principal. The story is told in several different voices, including firsthand from the 3 teen suspects. But we get a lot of short segments by several different folks with any connection to the 3 them, often as if they were being interviewed by an investigator. We also see dialogues of texting and interviews of the teens in police custody. There is a lot of speculation as to who committed the crime, but ultimately the suspects work together to try to solve the murder themselves.

Overall, the book was ok. I was most intrigued by the author’s technique, how he built the story using so many the perspectives, and integrated text messages etc. But the story itself wasn’t riveting, and the climax fell a bit flat. The ending was short & tidied everything up in a simple way that seemed to undermine the rest of this ambitious book.

I was provided with an ARC (thanks to the author & publisher!) and I am voluntarily posting my honest review.
