A Must Read!
If you read only one book this year, this one has to be it. I know we are only in February but I said what I said. This book grabs you and won't let you go from beginning to end.
A school meant to help underprivileged boys become better than what statistics say. A principal dead on school grounds. Three boys accused. Two Black and one Latino. And many different POVs looking at the situation(s) from many angles. Not once do those POV's get confusing. The story flows brilliantly and quickly.
Three boys accused. One is quiet but you know what they say about the quiet ones. He got into altercation with principal that day. One is from NY (story is set in DC) and hard on the outside also got into an altercation that day with the principal. One is related to the leader of a gang and , you guessed it, got into an altercation with the principal. All three boys sent to detention that day. All three boys unconnected. Unconnected because the boys aren't even allowed to talk at school. Not in class, not in the hallways, not at lunch. Sounds less like a school and more like a prison, doesn't it? Three boys with real dreams and desires of success. Of more than. Of better. One of those boys may lose it all.
Everyone saw something that day. But it's funny how a story differs depending on the angle in which you're seeing it.
