This book delivered on everything it promised. The book is written from a million different perspectives but they are each well developed & you never feel like your head hopping. Defintely a great choice for reluctant high school readers for its engageabilty, entertainment, & relateability. "Promise Boys," has big screen potential written all over it.
Most importantly, "Promise Boys" is a clear indictment on the failures of our educational system. If you have ever attended or worked in a school like Urban Prep- one that promises to build a brighter future for young disenfranchised urban minds, to save them from themselves before it is too late...- you will find yourself mmmhhmm-ing through every twist and turn of the novel. Though it touches on the themes of weak/poor parental/guardian relationships, the failures of the criminal justice system, and the trap of growing up in the hood, its main focus is on the failures within the school which makes for a rather interesting and refreshing twist on the trope.
