I really enjoyed the opening of Promise Boys! Not only does it introduce an intriguing mystery right away, but it gives the reader a variety of different perspectives about that mystery from a wide variety of people adjacent to it. I thought that this was a great way to establish not just the facts of the murder itself, but to get a much larger sense of the school as a whole and how it--and its students--are viewed by other people. The sense of this school as just crushingly controlling is captured so well.
