Promise Boys looks to be a very fast-paced story pieced together from many different perspectives from both major and minor characters. At the center is the question of who murdered the principal of a boys school, but this first impression already hints at many layers that influence what you (the reader) might think/feel about the different characters. The chapters shift from perspective to perspective, each with clear and distinct voices and roles - some people might find this jumps around a bit too much, but I appreciate that this style brings realism, energy and even a bit of chaos that comes in the immediate aftermath of a shocking tragedy. I think it's also helpful to recognize that different folks, even those that are more distant from the "action" still play a role in shaping a narrative. The author's filmmaking background are very evident in his writing and I'm interested to see this continue to unfold.
