When you look at the cover of Promise Boys by Nick Brooks, the image of the boys, each posed for arrest photos, the use of all red, (with the black cut out around the eyes) as a reader I feel as though I am being promised intrigue, an emotive struggle to the death with people (here, the police, family) who won't understand the main characters (pictured), and a mystery that, when solved, will leave me stunned…well, the cover with the addition of the excerpt about the book, gave me all that. Even the cut out around the boy eye’s in the center of the cover, it looks as though it is newsprint telling readers that the community that revolves around the boys and the school (that they attend with the murder victim) will be involved and all have a view and something to say.

While I go back and forth when I think what this book might focus on, the mystery surrounding who killed the principal of the school, the crime and all that happens to the boys because of being accused, the reaction of the community (including the police) in regards to what they think the boys did or did not do, all those issues, if included in this book, will make it an exciting read. Even the inclusion of one of the above mentioned (as the author may choose certain things to include in their storyline to make the story turn out the way they want) issues and seeing where the author will go with it, all makes for what will produce a good read.

Promise Boys sounds like a YA version with a few oksih themes akin to Locust Lane. The "Principal Moore Method", the name alone, usually when we hear that a person has some method that saves lives, there is a lot of controversy surrounding opinions of methods such as these. I can't wait to read just what Moore does that he thinks saves boys lives. How hard is Moore? What discipline does it include? What are the boy's reactions and thoughts on the method? And, especially, the parents? Why did they send their boys to this school? Do the boys deserve to be there? And, I am excited to find out, in the end, if these methods, the school has anything to do with Moore's murder. Because, who knows? A great twist would be nice??

This is a must read for me, without a doubt. Usually, when I read an excerpt I have my thoughts but this summary really gave me a lot to think on, questions I wonder about. And, when I get that type of reaction from a summary, those are the types of books I immediately pick up and can't put down til done. Just wish I had the book to do it! Wanna end with a shout out to the designer of the cover who did a great job, taking the three characters and arranging them as they did, for an arrest photo, one facing each way and one facing front! A++ idea!
