This young adult novel was substantial in that it dealt with several serious issues, yet it was a delight to read because it maintained a sense of hope and never felt preachy. The thing that stood out the most to me was the main character, Danny Cheng. This is told mostly from his first person perspective and his voice is honest and authentic. I had total buy-in and became completely engrossed in his life as a high school senior in Cupertino, California.

This book also has intriguing supporting characters intertwined in realistic relationships and intense situations, which are revealed in a satisfying pace as the book progresses. The title hints at the overriding theme of the light that honesty can overcome the darkness of secrets. The cover is joyful and perfect, and portrays both Danny and this book perfectly.
