Picture Us in the Light is a super compelling read that isn't about any one topic or plot point but rather about Danny and his last year of high school before going to college. It tackles so many things at once but it does it so well. Danny is messy, angry, worried about his parents and friends, and he's so fully developed. The plot slowly unfolds and the resolution is so worth the wait. The story is carefully pieced together. It features a mostly Asian cast of characters. Danny’s parents are Chinese immigrants. His best friends are of Asian descent and stereotypes are addressed throughout the book. It’s a very realistic picture of life in Cupertino featuring the people you would meet there. This book is about a first crush, a heartbreak, and how a friendship can become so integral in your life. Danny has feelings for his best friend, Harry, but this is not a story about coming out. Picture Us in the Light is about the complicated ways that our lives get woven together and lines blur. Fans of Fans of Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda will love this book because it also focuses on a group of friends dealing with getting older and feeling like they’re growing apart.
