I received a copy of PICTURE US IN THE LIGHT on BookishFirst in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the publisher and author.

Five stars and here's why:

PICTURE US IN THE LIGHT is BRILLIANT. No joke. I laughed. I snorted. I cried. I even dropped the book several times from laughing or crying so hard. No joke. Kelly Loy Gilbert delivers the heart-wrenching, entertaining, and original modern love story. Seriously.

I love the book cover – it’s the prettiest I’ve seen a very long time. That's what first drew me to the book. More so, I love the premise. Everyone has secrets. What matters is how far you would go to protect them. Danny is a talented artist who gets accepted to RISD, but has lost his way and his innate ability to draw. What happens next kept me riveted to this story and I devoured the opening pages so quickly that I ordered it as my BookishFirst reward book. It was a total gut-punch when the excerpt ended and I need more of PICTURE US IN THE LIGHT – stat!

As soon as the book came in the mail, I sat down and devoured it in one sitting. It’s been days and I’m still thinking about it. PICTURE US IN THE LIGHT tackles relevant topics such as suicide, adoption, family, immigration, and diversity. But the author handles each of one of these issues with such grace and strength that I’m left completely satisfied and overwhelmed at the same time. Her writing is exquisite from start to finish.

PICTURE US IN THE LIGHT has the most amazing recipe for a contemporary YA novel. If you love good writing, well-developed characters, and a plot filled with twists and turns and somersaults of epic proportions, then this book is for you! Highly recommend!
