The writing style of this work is reminiscent of other household names in YA fiction, such as John Green or Rainbow Rowell, but with a unique take. The main character, Daniel, is a very open and honest narrator, but is difficult for the reader to figure out. The relationships between characters— friends, or more?— is left partly up to the reader.
The book follows a familiar storyline— the life of a minority teen in the United States as he strives to meet his parents’ expectations while following his own dreams— but with a twist. No matter how supportive of his ambitions Daniel’s parents may be, he feels that a tragic event in his family’s past has set him up for failure and created a separation between parents and child since before his birth. Like any good coming-of-age story, the book is filled with strong emotions, confusing relationships, and questions of one’s identity. A captivating read!
