I have not read anything by Kelly Loy Gilbert before, but after reading the beginning of Picture Us in the Light, I will be. Her writing style is beautiful, and wow- she packs a lot of serious issues into one book! Depression, parental expectations, friendship, sexual identity, the death of a sibling, and probably much more! The characters feel very authentic, especially Daniel and Harry. I suspect that Regina's character will be more fleshed out as the book progresses as well as Daniel's parents.
It's not a fast-moving book, but not every book needs to be, especially ones that are more character driven. The cover of the book is absolutely stunning and perfectly captures the feel of the book.
