I really enjoyed this book and loved the characters and appreciated the important topics but the execution was a little too much at times. The prose- beautiful but I got bogged down in it a few times. The flashbacks didn't bother me too much but when you have flashbacks inside of flashbacks, it gets to be too much to keep up with in your mind. The writing is very dense but the story was so emotional and deep with characters you'll never forget. So many timely and important issues given light as well.

Overall this is a really beautiful and poignant novel with very real characters who are dealing with some heartbreaking things. It's very timely but I don't want to give anything away. I do love Kelly Loy Gilbert's beautiful writing but if you're looking for a light and fluffy YA Contemporary, this is not it. This is an important and beautiful story that will read you apart and build you back up again. You will feel everything so keenly as you're in the story with Danny and his family. I do recommend this one. I would say to everyone but with some trigger warnings(some of these may be spoilers in and of themselves but I feel the need to warn others that may be triggered by any of these things): suicide, depression, kidnapping(sort of), racism/bigotry, some drug use, car wreck, and if I think of any more I'll add them.
