I’ve never read anything by Kelly Loy Gilbert, but I’ve had my eye on her debut, Conviction, ever since it came out a few years ago. Since her debut, I’ve heard many, many friends and acquaintances rave about her incredibly skillful, nuanced writing and how she’s a master at carefully crafting stories with such heavy storylines and doing so in a way that’s delicate and thoughtful, without skimping on the emotional impact.

I can already tell from these 84 pages that what my friends have said are true. In these 84 pages, Gilbert deftly pulls the reader in and wraps them in a strong and secure sense of family, making the Cheng family unit feel so incredibly real. Even in this short glimpse, I can tell that not only is this going to be an emotionally charged book, but it’s definitely going to be impactful and timely, and certainly one that’s going to be appreciated by both teens and adults alike. Definitely adding this to my tbr and I’ll make sure to have a box of tissues (or two) because I have a feeling this one is going to tug on the old heartstrings a bit.

And as an aside — I absolutely adore the cover and it’s so very fitting to the story and certainly very reminiscent of Daniel himself. It’s very rare for a cover to perfectly match the story, but they knocked it out of the park with this one.
