What a thought provoking and eye opening read this was. Patron Saints of Nothing is a coming of age story about Jason, a Filipino-American teenager who has just discovered that his cousin, Jun, is killed in the Philippines as part of the country’s war on drugs. Jason decides to travel to the Philippines and find out what really happened to Jun since none of his family is willing to discuss it.

Jason is easy to love, and the writing was fast paced and quick to read. More importantly, what I really loved about this was the exposure of the Filipino culture as well as how the author shed some light on the bloodshed and deaths that have happened since President Duterte’s policies have been implemented in the Philippines. I think that many of us need the background and education of what’s going on in other countries today and how it is affecting families and people. This is an excellent showcasing in a fiction format.

I also think this has excellent representation of a biracial person trying to find their identity in two very different cultures and coming to terms with themselves as a unique individual while also coming to terms with familial challenges, grief, faith, and finding purpose. While this was not my normal read, I would highly encourage everyone to pick this up as I think it has such an important message.
