One of my favorite techniques in books is when the author starts the story with something a bit startling that doesn't seem directly related to the story until you read farther. I know this is a really specific thing to like, but what can I say? I have specific tastes. Also, as a side note, I'm a student at the University of Michigan so of course that was a bonus!
