This was a wonderfully written account of one woman's journey from Germany to Italy and ultimately the United States via Portugal and Cuba before and during the Nazi uprising. This was a slow read for me, I think because I had to stop and contemplate all that Elsa was experiencing. What people of Jewish ancestry and faith experienced was just unimaginable during Hitler's reign and then when Mussolini joined in..ugh.
The opening of this book had a mystery and while it drew me to the book it was a very small part overall but the mystery surrounding secondary characters Josef and Kaethe's lives, now that I really want to know but as Elsa said some secrets are not meant to be shared.
I am very thankful for the opportunity to read this book and hope Mr Webster might just have another one on the horizon.
