I really wanted to like this book. I thought that it was a part of history that not everyone knows about...those of Jews in Italy. Yet, I couldn't like it. It was because the main character telling the story rehashes the same thing over and over again. I was 150 pages to the end and began to skim the pages because it was just the same stuff over and over again. Will they get permission to travel, no harm had come to them, they never saw injustice, she misses her kids.
The other thing that I grappled with was: is this fiction or non fiction. I could not tell.
I felt that the characters did not face hardships other than the passage of time. In the end, I was disappointed and could care less what had happened to them.
