Having read many novels about WWII that take place in the midst of Germany and the concentration camps it is so interesting to read a book that talks about the lead up to the war and from the perspective of someone with a great personal stake in the holocaust but whose life is also removed from the direct horrors. Not that her life was always easy or without heartache. I can not even imagine the terror that came with sending your children to a new country (even grown children), hoping they make it without incidence. Nor the emotional terror Elsa and Paul went through trying to get to America.

This was a beautifully written story about so many things, a love story to the Naples Elsa knew, to friendships that are unexpected, to her beloved Pensione Alexandra. And written, obviously with great care and attention to detail, by her own grandson. I have so many questions after reading this book about Elsa and Kaethe, Italy, the pensione, and so much more. I just felt like I really go to know these people and was sad to leave them.

I am ordering Mr Websters previous book about his father today. Thank you Bookish first, the publisher and Ralph Webster for my much loved copy of this book.
