This is a well written beginning about a part of world history that most Americans know little about. We know tons about the Germans and quite a bit about the Japanese but Italy's role is mostly a footnote in American history books. I got an idea of what life was like in Italy in the pre and during the Great Depression. Lots of machismo. Roles of men and women, owners and workers were rigid and caste-like. The changes brought by the depression and Mussolini changed everything for this family. I can't wait to learn the connection between the first chapter and the rest of her story.
