Synopsis: A naked, burned body is found on a busy intersection in Los Angeles. Detective Tully Jarsdel, once a history professor working his way toward a doctorate, now must prove his credibility to his superiors and partner, Detective Morales, by solving this case. The evidence is sparse; the witnesses, non-existent. The only real lead: a red quarter glued to the palm of the victim’s hand. What could it mean? If that wasn’t enough, Jarsdel’s personal life is in shambles: he has a frayed relationship with his two dads (relating to his new career choice), he’s still trying to rebuild after an ended engagement, and he has no social connections to lean on for support. Can Jarsdel piece together this seemingly unsolvable case with everything (and everyone) stacked against him?

Review: I must admit y’all: this is a huge departure from the typical books I read. But, I do watch A LOT of crime shows and this book is very reminiscent of an episode of Law & Order or The First 48. It. Was. Good! I really enjoyed the grittiness of the storyline transpiring in the streets of LA, THE perfect backdrop for the heaviness of the main case Jarsdel was chasing. The author took his time to humanize Jarsdel, which was appreciated even though it made the middle of the book kind of slow. I also loved how the author unfolded the case, seemingly making LA much smaller (and connected) than it really is. I would definitely recommend this book. If you’re a crime show addict you’d definitely love this read!
