Not a big reader of police procedurals, but I got into this one pretty easily and had a good time. I think it mostly came down to my enjoyment of the main characters, Jarsdel and Morales, and the way they worked together. I wouldn't say they're likable, they're actually the opposite, but I like unconventional characters--your multifaceted eccentrics, your grumps. Yeah, Jarsdel is pretentious, but other characters call him out on it. I found it funny.

I thought the pacing was okay, but I can see how it might be slow for some people. Also, the graphic detail may be a turn off... I personally was fine with it, but Jarsdel and Morales have another case that involves multiple dogs having been poisoned, and I'm easily upset about that kind of thing, even mention of it.
