I’ve read a decent number of police procedurals at this point, so I’m familiar with this type of set-up:?body discovery, banter between cops on the scene, wild speculation before they have any real evidence, etc. I was kind of surprised every member of the force and tech team that appeared was male, even the victim was a man. I’m really tired of young women being murdered to propel a story forward, so at least that last one is kind of an improvement?

The Hollywood backdrop is vivid in its glamorous deterioration. Maybe the descriptions are even a little too detailed; it could be called gratuitous, but I guess that depends on how the rest of the book plays out. The characters are pretty standard, if forgettable. I think the author could benefit from ‘showing’ more than ‘telling’ as far as their personalities and interpersonal relationships go.

I thought the cover was eye-catching and visually pleasing. You can definitely look at it and tell what kind of book it’s going to be, which for that genre is probably a benefit.
