Set in 1941, Olive Bright, Pigeoneer, is set in a time period most readers are familiar with. Yet, this book puts a spotlight on an aspect of WWII that is much less written about, and in a delightful way.
Olive Bright is a young veterinary school student in London unable to complete her studies when the college must be evacuated due to the war. Now, having to return to her childhood home of Hertfordshire, she is itching for a way to serve her country. Unfortunately, her return home is seen as a blessing in the eyes of her father and stepmother who find her abilities instrumental with the family's pigeon loft and pig raising efforts of the Women's Initiative.
What ensues in the sleepy town of Hertfordshire is nothing short of a raucous take on a classic romance-murder-mystery. Olive finds a role for herself with a secret agency that goes by the name, Baker Street. To keep her cover, she invents a romantic engagement with one of the Captains at the Station and then promptly entangles herself in the shocking murder of the local gossip, Miss Verity Husselbee.
Deftly woven, and with so many references to characters of classic mystery novels, this novel will keep any reader on their toes. An excellent first novel in a series!
