So overall I liked the story, but the main character had a bit of a chip on her shoulder, which got old. Especially when she was flip flopping about if she wanted to solve the murder mystery. Speaking of flip flopping, is she interested in the main man or not? And while at first I like the tie in references to Periot, and Ms. Marple, the constant bringing them up got old. And while it was actually a main plot point to bring up Pride and Prejudice, that started to get old too.
The characters in the village really were strong and interesting (enough to bump this up to a 4 star!), but the characters and scenarios at the “institute” are just unbelievable.

I also really liked the story and historical bits about pigeoneering, but the balance of murder mystery to historical pigeoneering was a bit off, having sections totally about the murder and sections totally about the village life and being a pigeoneer.

If the main character was more likable, and if the characters at the institute less cringy, this book would have been a 4.5 star. And with some editing to balance out the murder vs pigeoneering village life, it would have been a 5 star.
