I found this to be an engaging WWII narrative centering around the character of the somewhat impetuous pigeoneer, Olive Bright, and well-drawn characters in the small British town of Pipley, Hertfordshire. Olive is approached by Captain Jameson Aldridge, who works for the Special Operations Executive (SOE)/Baker Street for war mission assistance using pigeons from her/her father’s loft. She accepts and has numerous adventures which include Jonathan, an evacuee child living with her family, Captain Aldridge, Dr. Ware and the Darling sisters. The portrayal of these village characters and their secrets and foibles is excellent and memorable. The narrative relating to the murder of Miss Verity Husselbee is intricate and entertaining, with numerous red herrings before a conclusion to Olive’s investigation is achieved.

The ending of the book seems to leave room for a sequel, and I would be delighted to read one if the author continues.

Thank you to Bookishfirst for an advance copy of Olive Bright, Pigeoneer.
