I love pre-war stories. The people mostly live ordinary lives up until that point. Then, all of a sudden, their entire lives change. Being in Europe, the danger of war is very close. Every aspect of their everyday lives change, from food, jobs, school and church. I find it fascinating how entire nations learned to change in a very short time.
