A little too much back and forth

So this is a typical romance novel that involves uncertainty between the two would-be lovers. Drusilla is a woman way ahead of her time, independent and full of ideas of how life for women should be (gasp!). Gabriel is a typical bachelor of the era, single, but with a few ladies on the side, and determined to live up to the expectations of his family, minus a few scandals they don't know about. What makes it a more interesting read is the time period and the rules of etiquette that create the situation the two main characters find themselves in, i.e., forced marriage, high society rumors and scandals, etc. This creates a somewhat cute and slightly racy read, however, the one thing I couldn't ignore was the sheer amount of back and forth bickering and uncertainty between the two characters. I understand that this is what creates the storyline, but it honestly becomes more annoying than engrossing after 100 pages so that it becomes difficult to finish.
