This modern twist on the fairy tales we love started out dark and caught my attention quickly. I enjoyed the story line and how the fairy tales were incorporated. I also liked that this book is intended for a slightly mature audience, as there are some darker and deadly aspects. However, I think the execution of details fell a little short. Some of the transitional events didn't line up or contradicted what happened in the previous chapter. And some of the ways that the main characters escape or conclude their rescue missions were cliche and rushed/not well thought out. It's understandable that this is a middle grade book, however, with the more mature aspects incorporated, I believe the audience could use more mature subplots.

I do reccommend this to younger readers that are too young for Harry Potter but old enough to transition.
