What a fantastic book. It could be placed on the retelling spectrum in that it is based on a fairytale but the world building was totally removed from a story already told. It was a little like Land of Stories with also a Keeper of Lost Cities vibe. If you liked those two series you will love this one. There wasn't a dull moment in this book and the author wasn't too wordy in her descriptions but did just enough to make it so you could really envision the whole concept. My twelve you old also read, and she couldn't put it down. In fact, she stayed up all night to finish it. The main character was likeable and while she started off a little weak, she gained confidence and really made the story amazing. She was witty and a great representative for girls who might not be the most popular but shows that doesn't impact your importance in life. Again, I would highly recommend for a tween girl.
