3.5 stars, rounded up. "The Thirteenth Fairy" stars Filomena Jefferson-Cho, a friendless middle schooler that just wants to read her "Never After" books and dreads middle school because she is constantly bullied. The last book in "Never After" is set to be published as the book begins. To say that Filomena is excited about it is an understatement. But then the book doesn't arrive. (All us readers know the feeling of the endless wait for the next book in a series!) Filomena is distraught... until she gets pulled into the world of "Never After" and gets to use her knowledge from reading the series to help her fight ogres and make friends.

The story was cute. Cute enough that I would read the second book. I liked that the story was constantly moving forward- one adventure after another- so there isn't much downtime to get bored. At the same time, a lot of fairy tales are mentioned in the context of a paragraph, and it's difficult to appreciate all of the different stories that are likely trying to be intertwined in the world of NA.

I think that middle-grade book lovers will enjoy this series. It's a wonderful wish-fulfillment story for readers to fall in to- it's an easy read and appropriate for young readers.
