This book was cute but anyone who has read The Land of Stories series would see some very obvious similarities. Filomena travels into her favorite book series to protect Aladdin's lamp and meets other fairy tale characters along the way. De La Cruz also doesn't vary her writing style that much. This book is very similar to the Descendants series. It's predictable, but I shouldn't be surprised since it is a middle grade book
Without reading the books that complete the series, I have a few theories that I won't go into here and spoil things for others. Jack and Alistair are great supporting characters to Filomena, but they are essentially Carlos and Jay to Mal, and Gretel is her Eve. I foresee a happy ending that will be contrived and predictable, but again, it's middle grade fantasy.
