I absolutely inhaled this book, as soon a our main character Filomena was introduced, I was quite taken wtih her. A 12 year old girl with over protective parents that FINALLY gets to walk alone to the bookstore. Filomeana is so excited to pick up the newest book in her favorite series. Imagine her shock when she realizes the book wasnt published? On her trek home she is almost gravely injured by a creature, FROM THE SAME BOOK SERIES. Filomena’s life takes a turn she never expected as she becomes the strong heroine in the magical world Westphalia, of her favorite book series.

I loved the way Melissa De La Cruz used the contrast in Filomena’s two roles to tackle tough subjects like bullying and racism in a middle school environment. At school, in her every day life Filomena is bullied for her multi-ethnic background and being adopted. While in Westphalia she is a strong female that leads and works with her favorite characters in the book to save the day, figure out what happened to the author, and how the story ends.

This book was such a fun read, filled with magic, fairies, fairy tales, friendships, danger, suspense, and an epic adventure the child in all of us can enjoy.

Thank you Turn the Page Tours for my copy of the book to review!
