Before starting this excerpt, I knew this was middle grade. I knew it, but i still expected a higher level of maturity. 10 pages in, and I was already irritated by our characters. The prolonged caught me, I loved the premise, but Filomena drove me crazy. I'm not a huge fan of middle grade, and this made that glaringly obvious.
