Initially I expected this book to be a retelling of Tangled’s Rapunzel story because of the title and the long red braid on the cover. In the Disney movie, there’s a song “Mother Knows Best” that sets the tone for the story. I guess that could still ring true in a way, since this book really does carry the message of a mother’s isolation and control. It’s very loosely related, though, and I wouldn’t have even thought of it without having seen the Disney movie.

There were a lot of characters to remember in Mother Knows Best, but the story is laid out well. It dwells heavily on science and fertility research, which fascinated me to no end. I kept thinking, “Could this be possible?” It was quite thought provoking.

The mysterious elements of the book revealed too much, though. Most readers will be able to plot out exactly what the big reveals will be, but it’s still fun to see how they play out. The end was a neat burnoff for the loose ends, and I would certainly read more from this author. This is a good title for fans of The Wife Between Us and similar twisty tales!
