She has a genetic disease that is nearly guaranteed to be fatal to any children they conceive as it already proved to be so to their 8 year old child they lost previously. She gives in to his desire to try IVF if he gives in to visit a cowboy in the field, Dr. Robert Nash, someone who is so far outside the box, that Claire goes and sees him without Ethan's knowledge. With Nash and his protege Jillian's help, and 37 of Jillian's genes, they create the first baby with 3 parents.
