After Claire's son dies of a mitochondrial disease at a young age, she doesn't want to risk passing on the disease to another child. But new advances allow her an opportunity at a second chance - by using a second woman's DNA. The only problem? It's illegal. When her husband finds out he calls the cops, and Claire goes on the run with her doctor, leaving his assistant (and the second mother of her child) Jillian to face charges alone. After spending years in hiding with their daughter Abby, Claire and Rob are terrorized when Jillian reappears, determined to claim her child, the man she loves, and the prestige she was denied. The book is told from three points of view - Claire's, Abby's and Jillian's, and they are written so differently that it's somewhat discordant, especially when reading Abby's POV, which is written like it's being told by someone her age. The premise is interesting, and believable, but I still struggled to really get into it even though it read quickly.
