I am the mother of four, and the first paragraph in, my instincts kicked in. When the mother reacts to the child's statement, I can feel her tension. The description of the story makes me want to delve into this story. As this progresses, I imagine myself in the mom's shoes, and I feel the panic she would feel. When we flip over to Abby's view, I can understand just how Abby feels. The eleven year old me reacted exactly that way when I pried into family "sore spots" with my mom. The dad is a bit tougher to understand, though. I suspect this is part of the mystery that unwinds as the story progresses.
