Imagine being a part of a scientifically unique three-way parent-ship, each parent is genetically represented in the child. Now imagine one of those three becoming a wicked and vindictive soul, hell-bent on destroying you, no matter what the cost. You gave up everything; your identity, your freedom, your peace of mind in order to keep this child. But don’t forget: this child has one-third of the wickedness and evil in her. Was it worth it? Are you truly safe, no matter how hard you run as long as you keep the child with you? Oh, what tangled webs we weave.
This is a futuristic look into the not-too-distant future: genetically modifying our embryos to replace the defective or diseased genes. Kira Peikoff does an excellent job writing this book from the different angles of each player who is affected by the trial IVF done secretly but exposed just months before the baby is born.
Full of emotion, believable characters, and understandable human flaws, this book had me hooked from the first meeting of the three prime and very strong-willed players. This is one of those books that, as you’re reading, you become perplexed at what the author’s options are. They’ve written themselves into a corner. I love this kind of writing style; the author proves me wrong time and time again.
A quick and engrossing plot that demands your attention; I can easily recommend this for readers who need a break from their real day-to-day life, even if it’s just a few chapters at a time.
Thanks so much to Crooked Lane Books for the ARC in exchange for an unbiased review.
