I was immediately intrigued by MISTER TENDER'S GIRL, written by Carter Wilson. The premise of a woman haunted by her past isn't new, but Wilson has managed to turn that idea on its head.
Alice is still suffering from a vicious attack she suffered when 14 at the hands of two girls obsessed by her father's graphic novel protagonist, Mister Tender. Having struggled to put all of that behind her, she is the successful owner of a coffee shop, and manages her anxiety on a day to day basis. When she is nearly assaulted at the gym by a man who seems to know her, and then receives a book starring her father's creation, her entire world is turned upside down.
Wilson's clipped yet precise language only adds to having the reader feel the protagonist's panic. His ability in such succinct terms to paint a whole scene is astounding. I look forward to finding out what will happen to Alice as she attempts to navigate this scary new world alongside what might be her nightmare made whole.
