Fourteen year old Alice Hill was stabbed multiple times by two classmates, who claim they were compelled to commit the brutal act by the fictitious character created by their victim's own father. Mister Tender is a bartender with a dangerous edge, a character in a very popular series of graphic novels. Years later, Alice is still haunted by her past. When she is confronted with all she has tried to leave behind, will Alice fight to become a survivor once again?

The beginning of Mister Tender's Girl was suspenseful and well written, but the book fizzled out towards the ending. Alice Hill has an inner strength that is betrayed by her panic attacks, leaving her a shell of the person that she has tried so hard to become. The premise is a good one, but the ultimate reveal of the source of Alice's torment left me underwhelmed. It seemed more like a plot point than a natural progression of the story. Alice is a well imagined character, as I could clearly feel her pain and her desire to move forward with her life. As a fan of both psychological thrillers and suspense, I wanted more from Mister Tender's Girl than I ultimately received. For these reasons, I would be hesitant to recommend the book to other readers who enjoy the genre.
