Amy Jo Burns new book, MERCURY, is a complex novel about the Joseph family who live in Mercury, Pennsylvania. As a reader, I had a love/hate relationship with this character driven story. Marley and her mom have lived in several places before arriving in Mercury. Marley meets the Joseph family composed of the father Mick who is a Viet Nam veteran, the mother Elise who seems to adopt Marley, and their three sons. I really liked the relationship between Elise and Marley. I also enjoyed Marley and her friend Jade’s relationship.
Every member of this family has problems! In fact, it was difficult at times to keep track of everything. There were times I had to reread sections.
