Mercury is a small town where everyone knows the Joseph family. Marley is seventeen in 1990 when she moves to Mercury and catches the eye of both of the older brothers, Baylor and Waylon. Their mother, Eliza, invites Marley into their home where she’s told she always has a seat at the table, but things change after she becomes ‘the one who got away’ to Baylor and gets pregnant by Waylon.
This family is full of drama. None of them really knows any of the others because they keep everything so bottles up. The youngest brother, Shay, only seems to feel loved by Marley. The dad is a disaster. Eliza has a myriad of secrets, and all of them work together in a barely getting by roofing company. I loved how the author touched on each family member and what made them tick. Marley was a breath of fresh air to this stale family, but will she stick around when no one seems to be able to change?
