I've heard good things about Amy Jo Burns' writing, though I've not read her work yet. Mercury has a promising opening: "Waylon Joseph crouched behind Mercury's ballfield bleachers on the south end of town, smoking a cigarette and hiding from his wife." Doesn't that make you want to read on!?
The cover doesn't totally do it for me - I understand the significance of the old and weather-worn, yet still standing, roof. But it's just not eye-catching or memorable, when I hope the book inside will be.
