I loved Amy Jo Burns' 'Cinderland' years and years ago, and this book seems like a fascinating fictional take on that area of the US and the late '90s/early 2000s. I usually don't go in for dysfunctional family dynamics, and some of the premise sounds iffy to me, but Burns' writing still delivers, so I might check out the full novel.
