This book begins with a son finding his father dead at work which happens to be a funeral home. The story progresses into a strong religious theme mixed with the sorrow and guilt of the son, Cohen in the story. At first, I thought that this would be mostly about the father being murdered and the story progressing into finding out how his death came about, but it was really more about the events of Cohen’s childhood. Cohen struggles with his relationship with his parents and his faith and whether or not he bares any responsibility in the death of his father, mentally or physically. There are a lot of big messages about love and family and surviving in dark times. I really liked that this story had so many themes and brought them together so well by the end.
