Quiet, subtle, moving but occasionally boring

Cohen Marah explores his past and present as he contemplates his role in his father's death. I really enjoyed the present story and all the explorations of familial relationships. It's definitely the highlight of the story for me.

I think I was expecting something different based off of the description and first few chapters but I still enjoyed what it ended up being. Smucker writes in a more passive voice filled with prose, metaphors and similes and while beautiful, at times it felt a bit too much for my personal taste. The story was interesting but the flashbacks were strange and underwhelming and because they revolved around the same small group of characters and the chapters weren't noted as past, I sometimes wouldn't catch the shift. It also just lacked the punch I thought it deserved given what it was actually telling. I also found the religious elements a bit too repetitive.
