With poetic prose, the author sets the scene nicely in each chapter. The narrator's description of the church when he was nine-years-old, with the fans waving and the sweat dripping, and his mother's lips silently rehearsing his father's sermon...I could picture it all so well.

And the cover. I'm drawn into a cover that shows a landscape or a sky. I don't know why, but I am. As well as the title--mentioning light...I'm also drawn to that.

But something leaves me disjointed. I can't pinpoint exactly what it is, but I suspect it is that I feel no connection to Cohen, or that the story lacks dialogue until the fifth chapter. Whatever it is, I'm not quickly drawn in and could live without knowing the outcome.
